» ABOUT US «
Sremski Karlovci has been famous for centuries for its great wine and very old vineyards. Our family’s generations have been growing and producing wine. Because of the centuries long tradition of growing grapevine in Srem, our family named its cellar after a Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, who was born in Srem, and whose legions were first to bring grapevine to Fruska Gora.
Our wine-making tradition, as our ancestors recall, started between the end of 18th and the beginning of 19th century. That was many years ago. People and their habits changed, but love and passion for wine survived in hearts of our forefathers and still live in ours. Over the years grapevine changed, technology of proccesing vineyard, as well as the procces of making wine, which became better and up-to-date. The thing that remaind the same over the years is the effort that we place into our wine so that we could offer quality wine to those of you who like to enjoy good wine. At the moment the eldest member of our family Djura is one the oldest wine-producers in Sremski Karlovci. and because of that many people refer to him as a legend of this intresting task.
He has difficulties walking, but he wouldn’t quit working in the vineyard. The wine itself is produced under his strict supervision from the old grapevine such as plemenka, slankamenka etc.Wine cellar „Probus“ is manufactor of several kinds of schnapps(brandy) like komovica, loza, kruska, visnjevaca, kajsija. Turkey people were not the only who knew about our wines, but they were also served at the Vienna palace. Best known Bermet was even served on Titanic. (and now you do not have to ask why is sunk?)
In the year 1881. vineyards of this province were infected by diseases known to people as filoksera, which destroyed all of Karlovci’s vineyards. Not wanting to lose their reputation, tireless Karlovci’s wine-makers planted new sorts of grapes, taught by a bitter experience from the end of the 19th century these were more resistant than the old ones.
